Those are not modern books though. The Secret life of Bees and The Help will do.
I don't think there is a book that could replace "To Kill a Mockingbird." And I hope no one tries!

There is no "current" book that can or should replace this classic.
These books wouldn't be taught today if they weren't educational in some way. I don't see why we have to have a "modern" book. Obviously these books are fine just how they are. I actually appreciate these pieces of literature more than anything considered modern.
I just read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for the first time and loved it. I, too, am a former high school English teacher. Boys may not be as interested, but the book is beautifully written and the themes are current.
