I'd tend to agree that it would have been made clearer if this was the case. I agree though. This is one of my all time favourite reads :)
Wouldn't being killed by a wild animal have been detected by police or during an autopsy?
I think she didn't make it clear so that the readers have something to puzzle about. It adds layers to the book, and takes it to a different dimension because of the various intriguing possibilities it leaves. I think she left just enough clues to make us wonder, but not enough to make us certain.
