You are correct. But every individual chooses his or her own path. Just because we are abused as kids, doesn't justify why we choose to hurt others.
Yes for sure Viviana. I just think that Genet was what she was and all the love and support probably wouldn't do anything to change that. It came to light very early with the pantry incident. They gave no reason for her nakedness in the pantry, but at 11 she must have been starting to want to experiment with "whatever" her mother was doing.
I'm a bit more hopeful about humanity. I think we start out all pretty good hearted and looking for happiness and it is largely our experiences and our reactions to them (and whether we take responsibility for our actions) that determines the course of our lives. I found the castration scene believable--except for the part that Genet agreed to it--but that might be a cultural nuance that I don't understand. I can see her mother as terrified about her daughter's sexuality with no ideas about other ways of teaching her better ways of handling herself. Perhaps she didn't want Genet to become like herself. Still, circumcision, after death of father, after usage by "brother", could warp a person. . .
