I realize Jane had a supernatural sixth sense that it was time to go back, but that does not really answer my original question. And although Jane may have the discipline to stay as his friend and helper, Rochester does not and would not keep his hands to himself.
I think Rochester could be tamed by Jane, and I think both he and she knew as much.
If Bertha had lived, Rochester wouldn't have needed physical help in the first place! :-) He was injured because he was trying to save Bertha.
