Mary You have to remember that the whole book takes place over the course of 3 summers in Scouts life. She sees the town change over that time and her perception of life around her slowly matures. Remember, the story takes place during the depression in the Deep South which also affects the townspeoples reactions to events.

Erin WV In great literature, unrelated does not equal pointless. With those early scenes, Harper Lee is creating a town, making us feel like Macomb exists, and establishing the innocence of Scout's existence prior to the trial.
