Therese I have always thought that writers of long series of books should age their characters like Ed McBain's 87th Precinct books (20? years of ageing over 50 years of writing, where the setting is always contemporary ) or Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone (6/7? years of ageing but in a a time frame that matches time passing in the books, so always late 80s, I think).

Then the characters don't age out, but the writer can still stop using the character if they get sick of him/her, as I think Harlan Coben has, sadly, done with Myron Bolitar.

Did Lew Archer age in the books?
