Jim Grant I didn't find it to be unnecessary, but there are things that could be cut out for plot purposes, but I stand by the attention to the level of detail asa adequate world building. There was something to the style of the prose and the physically walking WITH the characters I enjoyed.

Jamie Green I don't see how it's unnecessary. Granted there were things that maybe could have been cut, but they help build the world and the setting, and help give so much description to middle earth that Tolkein wanted to create.
