Richard Chappell Actually, many financial advisors teach against university degrees as well. Unless you study Engineering, medicine or some other highly technical field, there is no ROI. There are a lot of people who have destroyed their lives with college debt they will never earn enough in their field to pay back.
Sounds like her family's ideas of education weren't so bad after all.

Roxanne I work in the financial field and I have never once heard a financial advisor advise against a university education. I agree about the college debt situation, but the ROI for an undergraduate degree is most certainly there. If you don't believe me, look at the research done by the Pew Research Center. They estimate a lifetime earnings of $1M more for college graduates versus high school graduates.

JaneBV I think that there are many brilliant self-educated people today. She learned to read well enough to read the Bible and was motivated to keep reading. I have seen the picture of her father and I don’t trust photos anymore since photoshop. As to why she kept going back for more if the abuse was so terrible, there are many women and children who have returned and returned until they are horribly murdered,, so I don’t think that would diminish her credibility.
Finally, the family structure that kept that abuse going was based on secrecy and lies and the Westover parents had years of daily practice. Writing a book and photoshopping a Facebook photo would be easy for someone living off of manufacturing herbal cures. That is basic marketing.
