Because of his devotion to the Knight of Fellowship and his position as heir apparent to Goldenbirch, Loth has repressed or denied any flickers of attraction in the past, since he knows he may not be able to make a love marriage. For him, duty and faith come above all else. So even though he is attracted to Marosa, he doesn't fully understand or accept that feeling, which means the reader is left somewhat in the dark.
