how does he 'verbally' abuse her?
That's absolutely untrue. In the first book Daemon is an idiot with Katy 'cause he wants protect her family (he has lost her brother less than a year). They relation isn't unhealthy, they have to learn how to be with the other at first, thay are knew with relaton. Throughout the lux series you can notice the evolution of both. He learns that he can't do all and load alone all the reponsabilities.
Daemon is not abusive in any way. He is overprotective and why wouldn't he? Dee was all he had when he was under the impression that Dawson is no more. Risking Dee to befriend a human was last thing anyone would have done in his place!
Daemon is plenty of toxic. Some examples from book 2:

Just because another boy showed interest in Katy, Daemon thought it would be alright to be ass again. Because it's alright to be an ass to everyone who isn't your almost girlfriend. WHAT'S WORSE is that Katy acted like it was completly normal for him to be an ass? Like she acted like he was changed just because he stopped being a dickhead to her, while he still went around insulting everyone else. What kind of message is this sending to young readers? He could not even hear Blake's name without wanting to beat him up. This guy has no self-control.
(view spoiler) And then Daemon HAS THE AUDACITY to blame her??? for not trusting him with her suspicions??? Like he keeps repeating "I don't hate you. I still love. I'm just angry at you. It is all your fault. If it weren't for what you did, this all wouldn't have happened.". If that doesn't scream toxic I don't know what does.

Also can we talk about the fact that Daemon says he would do anything for her and would never want anything to hurt her, but what he actually means is that he just wants to beat up everyone that would even look at her? He isn't even willing to listen to her, "blinded by anger", and everyone just seems to be SO OKAY with that.
And when he says "I dont want anything / anyone to hurt you" he ofc excludes himself. He can still be mean to her because he is hot and everyone knows that hot people can be assholes and be forgiven.
