That's an interesting theory. Is there anything in the text to contradict the idea that Winston had been caught, brainwashed and released a number of times previously?
I think it's an interesting theory too. I remember this quote: "We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness". It really applies to what you are saying, considering that the ministry of love is the place with no darkness. I guess we'll never get to know the real intention of George Orwell behind it...
If memory serves, I do believe it is said in the book that they had been "onto Winston" for some time. For some reason 7 years comes to mind. I'd have to reference back to confirm. Yes, indeed: it's at: 453.9/588 in my ebook: O'Brien says: "For seven years I have watched over you..." So this theory could make sense.

Such an interesting view, thank you. It relates not only to the book itself, but to so dintinctly, I think, to the common ground of human behaviour, a behaviour I certainly have seen, and continue to see, in my own thinking. In a sense, it's a refusal of hope to die, and at the same time, it seems to be a surrender of the drive to survive. Thank you.
