Interesting take, but from Red Queen, I got the notion that Maven had never fallen in love with Mare, he was only playing his part as his mother had arranged from the start. I thought it was an elaborate scheme from the beginning for him to take the crown.
And if he truly loved Mare, shouldn't he have found a way to spare her from the execution in which he intended to kill his brother? I also wouldn't think he would torture Mare in GS if he truly loved her. He seemed to relish in it. As well as the last scene, but the last scene I can give a pass since Mare killed his mother, a little payback on his part makes sense.
When did he say he would find and save her? I might've missed it and may need to reread this section (if you tell me roughly where it happens like between events A and B, that works)
