In this book there is a lot of dialogue that helps the reader feel like they are living in the book. For example, "'A job,' Whitney told her, her voice flat. 'Why else would Lindsey call during dinner?'" This quote does something for the reader because the part Sarah Dessen writes "her voice flat" it helps the reader visulaize how it was being said and of course coming from Whitney it was dull the way she said it. Also the reader can visulaize the sarcasim in Whitney's vioce becuase of the part where it says "why else would Whitney call during dinner?" This sarcasim is important becuase now the reader feels like they are living in the storyworld.
Dialogue in this story helps the reader understand the book better. For example, "'Gracie?' my dad pushed his chair back getting on his feet, 'What is it?'" This piece of dialogue is very important because the reader knows something bad is about to happen becuase of the tone. The reader can almost picture the dad in a concerned and paniced tone. The reader is now on the edge of there seat waiting to see what's next.
In the book Just Listen tone and dialogue helps the reader understand what's happening and helps them live in the moment of the story. For example, "My father raised his eyebrows. 'School,' he said" (61). This helps the reader because the father is talking to Kristen (the oldest daughter who isn't the school type of girl) who says she wants to go and get her degree. The reader can picture the dad having a shocked tone (knowing the kind of person Kristen is) and it helps the reader picture what it may have been like if they were living inside the story world. All in all dialogue and tone not only helps the reader understand characters better, but also helps them live in the moment that the characters are living in.
In the book Just listen by Sarah Dessen, there are many examples of dialogue revels a lot of character. One example of this is on page 11 the author writes " unlike me, she did not shy away from confrontation." this reveals character because it shows that Annabelle is a very reserved because she doesn't want to talk about serious things with her friends and it also shows that she is a round character because she expresses many character traits throughout the book. This is only one example of dialogue in Just Listen
That's so true!! I definitly learned that Anabel is a shy girl from that piece of dialogue and I also than knew how to react to her behaviors, knowing that she is a shy girl. Some actions that she has done after this piece of dialogue was that she didn't want to confront Sophie, which was no shock to me (becuase I knew that she was shy and doesn't feel comftorable talking to certain people).
"'hi!' Mallory said, 'I can't belive it-you're a Jenny Reef fan too?'" In this quote I can imaging Mallory being super exited, talking really fast and almost squeling. Knowing the type of character Mallory is we know her tone is always up beat. I can feel like I'm in the moment in this piece of dialogue, I can almost hear Mallory speaking.
