I tend to agree with you, that under most circumstances people will not so quickly abandon their civility. You never really know until you're actually faced with it as you said. I suppose that's one of the reasons why dystopian fiction is so prevalent among pop literature. It gives us some insight, helps us think about how we might react in those situations.
