Good point about the disabilities, but still not convincing enough. Lee made it quite clear that the lowliest, most despicable and/or poorest whites were still a notch higher than a 'colored' person. This would include Boo Radley, so he's not in a similar plane by virtue of being white. As for the Sheriff, would he fabricate evidence to let a black person go free? I think not.
I think another reason they made up the story about him falling on his own knife was because they couldn't be sure whether it was Boo Radley or Jem who stabbed Robinson. If there was an investigation, Jem might have been revealed as the killer.
