I thought Sola was Latin? Cause wasn't there mention of her abuela or something at one point?
Sola is of Latin descent. Olive skinned is usually found in people who are white, may be of mixed race of some sort, or like in Sola's case, have Latin roots, but not be as dark as many of her other Latin counterparts. But "Olive" complexion is usually used as a description to describe someone who is white, but who is not pale in skin tone. Someone who has a slight tent of color to their complexion, but wouldn't be considered too dark in skin tone.
Yea, I'm on the gravy train that Olive skin is just another descriptor of a lighter complexion. But for me, when I think "white" for a character, I'm usually thinking more European descent, maybe from the country, etc. Bu with olive skin tone, I'm thinking something more Italian or mediterrian (sp?) kind of complexion.
Yeah. I go by the criteria in my family. I have everything from Latin, Greek, Mexican, African American, Dutch etc.. and this is just in my immediate family. And my family's skin tones range from so dark it almost looks purple, to pale with red freckles.. So we have plenty of Olive toned folks in my fam. My son is an Olive tone. A bit on the lighter side of the scale, but Olive toned.... But in books Olive toned is always the "go to" description when they are describing someone who would be considered white, but who isn't pale skinned.
Olive is white too. Not all blacks are from Africa. Not all whites are from Europe. Yet another example of why skin tone shouldn't matter.
Oh I get that Kristin on not all blacks are from Africa(although they live to make you check that box anyway more times than not in America, like it sums up everything about someone *insert eye roll here*). But yea I was just going off most character descriptions I've read and tied it into the whole check the box thing they have you do in real life. So was relating the Olive skin thing to more like the Hispanic but not Caucasian "box" in my head and for white the box would usually be like European, Anglo, kind of background of a sort. But yea on the varying colors in the fam tree we have that as well Princess Nhya. I think it just comes with the territory really being in America sometimes. No joke on the melting pot at times.
