Yes. I do realize that The Ocean At The End Of The Lane started out as a short story. Gaiman should have kept it that way. This was my first Gaiman novel and I don't think I'll be picking any other of his novels for some time. And I got it at a decent price, so no complaints there. From what I hear, it's the hardcover edition that is a bit pricey.
I found this book to be similar to The Graveyard Book, which was fleshed out and had a more complete story. When you're willing to give him another chance try that or American Gods. I can't guarantee that you'll like them, but they're a better barometer for his style.
