You're one of the few people who felt similar about the ending to me. The most responsible and self-sacraficing choice Nick could make once there was a child involved was to stay. In general, I don't like cheaters, but the fact that Nick's moral failings were of the run of mill sort and born from human weakness and neediness instead of some twisted sense of justice, made him the more sympathetic in my eyes. In no way do I think he "deserved" Amy.
They were just vial people who if there were a sequel would eventually have to kill each other. Some one please take and raise that child!
