Cardboard characters? I have to disagree with you. I'm a big fan of the series, but I can see why some people don't like it... Too many characters, too many sub-plots, and too much subtlety. I can also understand the claims of being bored by some of the characters/chapters.
But flat characters they are not. One would be hard pressed to find even a minor character (aside from nameless servants) who is not fleshed out. Shit, he even fleshed out Hodor and Nan; a simpleton who can't speak more than one word and an old woman who tells stories to kids.
