Lydia was the youngest.
You raise a very good point Readings but I would state it more strongly. It wasn't just that Lydia was raised to believe that marriage was salvation- all women were at that time. Although some jobs had opened up for women in the industrialized towns by that time, they were horribly paid and done only out of absolute necessity. Moreover, women could not inherit. Options were so very narrow for them that life centered around finding a good match. She seemed to take steroids before beginning her search for a man.
