My thanks to these follow-up comments (below). The OP's entire question just...fried my mind. Sometimes I wonder whether I am 'too harsh' ..good to know others feel the same on a question like this!
Your first and last sentence, to some, may seem 'harsh', but I chuckled to myself. You laid out your reasons which are spot on.
My reaction to the question was, "WTF?"
I could wax poetic on all the reasons why this is one of the greatest films AND adaptations of all time, but it would break the internet.
These days, no director can apparently carry out the most basic skill of directing (a skill Coppola has in spades) and that is: keep the camera still--keep it rock-steady--and just leave it on the actor's faces. Allow the actors to act. That is one of the superb things about the original film. Its all about those performances. That's why you can't equal what Coppola did: without top-quality performers, (which we don't have these days) we get directors lately who are too nervous to trust their casts ...and so their cameras jump all over the place to cover up for the lack of talent! Atrocious!
A remake would be a lot of fun to watch - especially if it was an HBO mini-series where they could incorporate the prequel "The Family Corleone" by Ed Falco.

Don Vito: Russell Crowe or Christopher Walken

In making this list, my aim was to use actors that were never featured in the Godfather saga. Here is a list of currently active actors I believe would best fit the roles in the Godfather.
