I think the hat may have been symbolic, as there is a fairly common superstition that putting a hatting on a bed is bad luck (which of there was plenty for this family). Also, Roy Dial was a leader in his baptist church, and there is a mention that a retired doctor was the first to come to the murder scene, as he was on his way back from the babtist church service. I think this eliminates Dial, as surely someone would have noticed if a prominent church member like Dial had missed the service that particular day? In any case, since this book was so centered on families (their relationships, and dysfunctions), to me it would feel strange if the killer was not part of the family/household.
