Rosella As a childhood victim of bullying and a current teacher's assistant, I would have to say that extremes such as this are the norm. I'm happy that you are such an accepting person and I'm glad you've never been the victim or bullying or prejudice, but for many of us this is the norm. You're description of how the side characters treated Auggie "like glass or trash because he looked different" perfectly describes how many people, especially children, treat people with disabilities.
Having said that I also felt as if the parents had hidden him away, although I don't believe this was the author's intention. The author seemed to genuinely think that his multitude of surgeries was a legitimate reason to home school a child who they would have otherwise sent to school. I disagree because I had

Rosella a friend who missed school for frequent surgeries, including some which took him out of town for months at a time and he did well in public school.
