About Ulysses, here's a tip I learned from my college professor: start with chapter 4, the one that begins, "Mr. Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls." That chapter is more like the kind of diction we're used to, and it helps get you used to his habit of making puns all over the place.
