Well, Ender's Game was originally a short story. Was he intending to write a novel when he thought of it? Or just continue on to Speaker of the Dead?
I just recall that the Speaker of the Dead was the original idea, but he couldn't figure out how to tell that story until he had imagined Ender's Game. I believe that's how he explained it.
