I agree, totally. In light of what each of them has endured, a life not spent gibbering in terror hunched into a corner of the deepest darkest closet is a win, imo. Actually finding a measure of peace, and the sheer hope it takes to start a family in their world? Pretty darned amazing. Honestly (and this isn't a dig at anyone's opinion, at all), most of the people who disliked the book vehemently seem to take issue with the book being generally sad. First, that's the nature of dystopian fiction. Second, that's the nature of life.
