Gail Because the first book is Jamie & Claire's courtship it is much more like a romance book than all the rest in the series. It really is a VERY different book from the rest. I think it is worth continuing on in the series, but I also know the books are just not for everyone. Lots of hard stuff.

Elizabeth I don't like violence at all, no matter who is involved. This was worse than watching the news!

Brizo I think the beating Claire took for running away was in character with the times it was written for (1749). Women in those days were owned by the men in their families, and beatings were common. I think you have to put the books in historical context, not compare it to behaviors you might expect today. As for why women might like books with that in it is complex I think. We rarely meet men today that have the complexity of men in of the 1800. For men of the 1800's everyday was survival of some sort, whether it be hunting for food, fighting off foreign armies, surviving the elements, disease, etc. Protecting their families was primary in their daily lives. It was a much more brutal time when children were whipped into compliance and women too. I think most men in those days believed they knew best and that was part of their protection mode. Read it from a historical perspective and thank the stars we don't face that today (unless we live in area of the world that are still backwards for women. I think reading this may also help you understand the mind set that is prevalent in some third world countries.
