yes , it is very sad the way he is treated. have you read fault in our stars? if not please do, from what it sounds like you would enjoy it.
Some of the "unrealistic phrases," included "cool beans" seemed left over from the time of my adolescent (late 90s, early 00s) and seemed out of place with the other cultural references which clearly places Auggie chronically much closer to my students. I think the author, who otherwise intuitively captured the voice of a fifth grader clumped all tween slang form the past fifteen years together as contemporary. Her one mistake was realizing just how time specific middle school language can be.
