Hal Thanks for your note. I have tried "Still Life" and a few others in that series. I know they are popular. I just found the writing verbose.

Since I first posted my question, I have been enjoying Ruth Rendell's "Inspector Wexford" series. They are certainly more intense and lack the sweetness of Constable Evans, but Rendell has created a whole world, filled with astute psychological insights and characters who refuse to be cliches.

I have also tried M.C. Beaton. I guess Hamish MacBeth can be compared to Evan Evans, but I didn't enjoy him as much. And I find Beaton's Agatha Raisin series to be trite.

I admit it: I am picky. I have been disabled 18 years and reading is one of the few things I can still do, so this question is really important to me.

I wish that Alexander McCall Smith would add to his Isabel Dalhousie series. I had read that a new book would be published April 1, but that turned out to be erroneous.

Kabrada Have you tried the Peter Maxwell series by M.J. Trow? It is brilliantly written.

Hal No, I have not heard of that series. Will check it out. Thanks for your willingness to help a stranger.

Kabrada Anything to promote "Mad Max" - and of course to help someone who likes Evan Evans. ;)

Hal I see you know my old friend Isabel Dalhousie. I was sad when I came to the end of that series.

Kabrada Yes, I do like her. Still two books to go for me, plus the e-short. I have developed a taste for 44 Scotland Street as well.
