Outlander is completely the opposite of a 'bodice ripper'. Those are all flash and no substance. Outlander is very rich with historical detail, both in settings and plot. I'd consider this more literary historical romance if it has to have a tag to it.
As you go through the series, more supernatural elements appear. A Breath of Snow and Ashes won the Quill award in the scifi/horror category. But you have to read through the series to get there :-)
