Claire grew up enthralled by fairy tales and fantasy novels, which nurtured their lifelong passion for studying the role of imaginative stories in reinforcing or challenging cultural tropes. As both a scholar and parent of two daughters, they became increasingly interested in tracing the origins of beloved fairy tales to unpack the more unsettling themes that have endured subtlety through centuries of retellings aimed at children. They began studying, researching and writing articles that examine cherished fairy tales through a critical feminist lens, probing their representations of gender, power dynamics, sexuality and violence.
