Mersault is the protagonist of Albert Camus' novel L'étranger. He was born and lives still in Algeria ('a citizen of France domiciled in North Africa, a man of the Mediterranean, an homme du midi yet one who hardly partakes of the traditional Mediterranean culture).

Mersault is emotionally detached and analytical, and finds himself indifferent to issues, particularly moral, that so greatly affect others in society.
