Abbot Heribert
aliases
Prior Heribert, Brother Heribert
Head of the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul for eleven years. Met Cadfael whilst still Prior Heribert. He is a gentle and peaceful man. When King Stephen reclaimed Shrewsbury Castle and Shropshire for his own in the summer of 1138 , Heribert did not act quickly enough to officially recognise Stephen as King, earning some bad feeling from the King. Heribert is called to a Legatine Council, at which he anticipates rebuke and perhaps a change in his status at the Abbey – to return as Abbot or a simple monk.
