George Con
George Con (or Conn) (c.1598 - 1640) was a Scottish Catholic diplomat and writer who authored Vita Mariae Stuartae (Life of Mary, Queen of Scots) around 1624, considered one of the earliest significant biographies, written in Neo-Latin to present Mary as a Catholic martyr, shaping her image in European culture and highlighting the Scottish diaspora's role in Counter-Reformation Europe.
Con was born into a prominent Roman Catholic family in Aberdeenshire. He studied at the Scots Colleges in Douai and Paris and then at Bologna University. In 1623 he entered the service of Francesco Barberini in Rome. He served as a diplomat for Barberini in Paris and Madrid and was described as his Secretary for the Latin Tongue when he arrived at Henrietta-Maria's Court in July 1636.
