George Baillie
George Baillie, born George Hamilton, (1723 - 1797) was the younger son of Charles Hamilton, Lord Binning, and Rachel Baillie.
As a young man in 1740 he set off on the ‘Grand Tour’ returning to Scotland with enthusiasm for current architectural taste. In 1759, he inherited the Mellerstain estate and adopted the surname Baillie. In 1770 he commissioned Robert Adam, the doyen of architectural design in Britain at that time, to link the two wings of the incomplete house.
