August Winbladh

Major August Winbladh was a Swedish army officer. He was exiled to Kamchatka by an order of 18 July 1770.
Winbladh was a close associate of the Hungarian adventurer Maurice Benyovsky and was prominent in the party which siezed control of Bolsheretsk on 18 April 1771 and then fled Kamchatka under Benyovszky's leadership on 12 May, sailing on the galiot St. Peter to the port of Macao in China. On Formosa, Winbladh led reprisals against the native population after three of the voyagers were killed on going ashore for fresh water.
Winbladh continued with the survivors the onward voyage as far as Mauritius. Too ill to travel further, he remained in Mauritius when they sailed for France on 4 April 1772. He subsequently returned to Sweden.…more
