John Abernethie
John Abernethy (d. 1639) was a Scottish churchman.
In 1607, the attempt by the Kers of Ancrum to instal Abernethy as constant moderator of the Jedburgh presbytery was resisted by David Calderwood, the anti-episcopal minister of Crailing, and the synod of Merse and Teviotdale. Abernethy was finally installed in July 1608 after Sir Gideon Murray of Elibank, one of the Scottish Commissioners appointed by James VI and I to pacify the Border, enforced the appointment.
Abernethy was appointed Bishop of Caithness in 1616. In 1637 he was one of four bishops who opposed the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer. Along with Scotland's other bishops, Abernethy was strippied of his episcopal title by the general assembly of 1638. By submitting to the authority of the assembly he avoided excommunication. He died in 1639.
