Adam Berwick

Tall farm laborer in his early 40s with light blond hair, whose plans for higher education were dashed when his two older brothers were killed in the Great War in 1918–and his father in 1919 of the Spanish flu. Quiet, introspective and deeply sensitive, he reads to learn how others cope with life. Taught himself to read at age 5 and won a scholarship to college—the highlight of his life. The farm he works used to belong to his father’s family for 4 generations, but now belongs to James Knight. Grew up in the old farmstead home that he was forced to sell a few years ago. Now lives with his mother and farm dog Rider in a two-up, two-down terrace cottage on the lane leading to the main Winchester road.
