William Thomas Baxter

William Thomas Baxter (1771 - 1842) was a Scottish radical and a canvas and sailcloth manufacturer in Dundee. He was a son of Thomas Baxter and Elizabeth Craik. The Baxter family were members of the Glasite Church.

In 1788, Baxter married Isabella Doig. The couple had five daughters and two sons. Isabella Doig died in 1811. Sixteen years later, in 1827, Baxter married Mary Ann Scott, who was twenty years his junior.

In 1796, Baxter was one of the founding members of Dundee Public Library.

The teenage Mary Godwin lived in the Baxter family home, 'The Cottage', between June and November 1812 and between June 1813 and March 1814. During this time, she developed a close friendship with Baxter's youngest daughter, Isabella.…more
