Born in the U.S. of French immigrant parents, both scientists at Harvard University, and non-practicing Jews. Ali has blonde hair and blue eyes like her mother. Moves to France after her parents die to be raised by her oncle and tante. Moves to New York City in 1940 (age 19) to attend art school, and is hired by the WPA to paint murals. Lives in her studio and when not painting, meets her friends and fellow artists at the “Jumble Shop”, their local bar. Meets Eleanor Roosevelt who becomes her patron.
