Patrick Gillespie

Patrick Gillespie (1617 – 1675) was a Church of Scotland minister, Covenanter, and Principal of the University of Glasgow during the English occupation of Scotland. He spent lavishly on the great building project which had begun in the 1630s. Under his leadership, the Old College's inner quadrangle and tower were completed and new houses and other buildings were erected.

Gillespie strenuously opposed the "Engagement" for the rescue of Charles I, helped to overthrow the government that sanctioned it, and advocated severe measures against 'malignants.' He considered the terms made with Charles II unsatisfactory, and after the battle of Dunbar (3 September 1650) he assembled a meeting of gentlemen and ministers in the west, and persuaded them to raise a separate armed force, which was placed under the command of officers recommended by him.
