If you have a wealthy family or savings, pensions, other sources of income, benefits, grants, or something else that gives you enough to live on, go ahead. Otherwise, make sure you stay healthy and have a clear purpose in mind before plunging into it.
Unfortunately we live difficult times for authors, and for writers in particular. The average annual salary in the UK has dropped from about 22K to 6K over the last ten years. Copyright royalties are being unpaid by the big tech, platforms and advertising giants while they profit from the thousands that every day self-publish or start newsletters and blog online but remain penniless or underfunded. Unions and trade associations have a great role to ensure social cohesion and support but they themselves are incredibly under pressure by large publishing houses and broadcasters.
Perhaps younger writers that are at ease with producing videos, podcasts, audiobooks can leverage on this type of demand, choosing scripts and broadcasting media, finding new businesses different from book publishing.
I hear of professional writers of fiction and nonfiction in their 50s or 60s let down by their agents and by the publishers they have relied on for their entire life and career. Fact is the whole publishing industry is shrinking and the printed book in a slow and inevitable decline: it is tough to find yourself self-employed or freelancing in this sector with a low, miserable or no income at all while you aspire to write extraordinary books. Not to mention if you have poor health or caring responsibilities.
Money is not everything and it is exciting to still have ideas, projects, commitment to work as a writer in older age, perhaps continuing something you started as a professional hobby or as a parallel career in your youth, as it happened to me, but.... beware it is really tough! If you have a choice of something else more remunerative and safer for you to do, take it. Writing can always wait for a better day!
Above all, both young and older aspiring writers should be aware this is a sector with plenty of scams. Be careful, there are so many offering services to aspiring writers! I would never, ever pay anybody to publish my work but if I could afford it I would employ agents, editors, marketing and sales executives: being self-published is an extraordinary opportunity to start a business and developing your entrepreneurial skills.(less)

Actually I always have two or three different research or writing tasks in front of me at the same time so that if I am stuck at something or I need more time with a task I switch to the other one. If I really have a writer's block it is usually because I am not feeling very well or I haven't worked enough on a concept (for instance, researching a subject, finding the right level of vocabulary and tone and so on) or... I am just too tired and I'd better go to sleep or cook a meal :) (less)
