Many of the classic 1800s/early 1900s horror authors published anthologies of their own, or with them serving as editor. RW Chambers for instance. Chambers, and Poe, St. Villiers, Ambrose Bierce --all of these big names romped in the short story format. When it comes to radio; there's no more vivid or effective complement to the short horror story than than those Red/Blue/Mutual network audio plays from the '40s and '50s. There's 3 or 4 different versions of 'The Signal Man' alone. Anyway ...that's as may be. The real question is: what is UP with the hideous book cover chosen by Penguin, above? How horrible!(less)
