Joan of Arc by Herself and Her Witnesses was written by Regine Pernoud and first published in 1962. The book uses documents and quotes to tell the story with commentary filling in the connections. She is a renowned French historian. The second book, Joan of Arc Her Story was written by Regine Pernoud together with Marie-Vernique Clin and published in 1986. The first part of the book is a narrative with occasional quotes. This is 164 pages in my copy by St. Martin Press. The second part gives a short biography on each of the principal characters. Title of part three is Issues and Images. The introduction to part three says it provides clarifications about matters concerning Joan and information about knotty issues debated by historians. Some of these issues raised by historians over the centuries border on the ridiculous—the stuff conspiracy theorists dwell on. The first issue is Joan’s name, on which you will see many variations.

If the question is which one should I read, my answer is both. This is one of the most interesting people in the history of the world—perhaps the most intriguing and devout woman after Our Blessed Mother.(less)
