In the "discussion" section of the paperback, I could've SWORN the author mentioned a specific prep school novel that helped her shape the minor character, "Little Washington." Is my memory correct, and if so, what's the book?

Throughout the novel, Lee describes herself as an outsider, partly because of her scholarship-student status. How does Sittenfeld develop this theme of fitting in racially and financially?
