For me the historical research into the records of the time including the details of the court proceedings, the cultural milieu, the identity of the most prominent of the models and their trade (some were prostitutes who knew Caravaggio well, one young man was a lover of Caravaggio who himself became a prominent artist and later moved to Sicily), as well as the political details of the Counter Reformation and the paranoid climate at the Rome of the period. It is finally a mystery story about how and why Caravaggio died. Above all though there is a thorough discussion of all the paintings, where they are, and much about who commissioned and who bought them.(less)
