so this is the same book as "the sword and the scimitar' by David Ball?... since I've had that book for ages....and it sounds like its the same story

I can see there are many other books with the exact same name and seemingly about the same things, just written by different authors. Are they all the same books but just with different takes on the events?

Both books are about the Great Siege of Malta, but they're not the same book. I suppose your "different takes on the events" fits best. Just as there are many books about the The Battle of Waterloo or Pompeii or Cleopatra, there are various books about this battle in history. But they are written by different authors and therefore are not the same book. The plot, dialogue, characters and things will be different, but the foundation for the battle and events that took place will be similar in that they're all writing about the same historical event that took place. I am guessing this title is a popular one for this event as it was a battle between Christian Europe (the "Sword") and the Islamic Ottoman Empire (the Scimitar") - the title alludes to that. (less)
