Deea Deb The themes that I have come across are - severe patriarchal dominance, cultural and social divide, discrimination against women and female children, d…moreThe themes that I have come across are - severe patriarchal dominance, cultural and social divide, discrimination against women and female children, domestic violence, immigrant children trying to fit in and not feeling that they belong, huge importance placed on "tradition" that negatively impacts the family members because they don't identify with that tradition.

It is also interesting is that the Khan family immigrated to a country (England) that colonized their country for about 200 years. Considering that the father clearly feels a great deal of anger towards India and is very passionate about Pakistani traditions and Islam, it is interesting to see how he would settle in a country that colonized India (Pakistan and Bangladesh were a part of India at the time). And yet he does not believe that England is a good place to bring up children of his origin.
