Sterling misses his brother and worries a bit about him, but he receives several letters from Herschel assuring Sterling that he's doing fine. Toward the end of the book, the Armistice occurs, and then Sterling's family gets an uncensored letter finally letting them know where Herschel saw action (including some of the bloodiest battles in France). Herschel has to spend another six months helping to rebuild Europe, but at least Sterling now knows he's safe.(less)
