It follows a female protagonist who learns to fight and decides to follow her own path rather than the expectations of others. Also Heir of Night by Helen Lowe which is excellent. Heir of Night is the first book in a series of four (book four comes out in 2020). The first book has no romance in it and has an excellent epic/ high fantasy plot involving a quest. This is one of the few series I know which has got better with each successive book. I also love the Tamora Pierce books and would say these have similar themes.(less)
